Community Coats

Everyone deserves comfort

"The goals was to raise awareness for invisible homelessness and poverty in our community. I wanted to break stigma and rumors surrounding why people become homeless and fall into poverty since there is a lot of assumptions such as substance abuse and laziness being the main causes, when most of the time people become homeless and impoverished due to factors that are not their fault. I wanted to hold a coat drive in order to bring some comfort to the many people who are forced to live on the streets during the harsh winter months."

Coat Drive

Erin and Hannah wanted everyone to have the benefits of warm clothes and layers during winter weather conditions. We may not live in a big city where people might suspect a lot of these issues, but they researched homelessness and poverty in the Barrie and Innisfil area, learning that this problem is still very apparent. They were touched and wanted to do what they could to help. They chose to collect new or gently-used warm clothing, such as jackets and sweaters. They would donate their items to local initiatives which offer help to people living in poverty and some that may not have a place to call home. They used announcements to inform students of their project and left a bin in the main hallway at school where students could give items.

Their Goals

  • Educate people in the community of the abundance of homelessness and poverty in Barrie

  • Educate people on the truth and reality behind why people become homeless

  • Spread word of this problem and their initiative through announcements, posters, and word of mouth

  • Collect coats and sweaters from schools and around the community

  • Distribute these items to organizations and shelters such as Salvation Army and Goodwill

Help Out!

We all have things that we no longer wear, need, or might not even fit anymore that could easily be donated to help others who might be in a more unfortunate circumstance.
