Erin Mahon and Rachel Michaels
"Change your perspective, Change the world..."
About their Project
Eco Schools is a Canada wide program where schools complete various initiatives and activities to become eco certified. At Nantyr Shores Secondary School we are lucky and proud to be considered an eco school. To retain this title, each year we must be renewed. Grade twelve students Erin and Rachel have a love for the environment and want to keep our school eco friendly.
Both girls are actively involved in the Ecos Club at school and wanted to make a difference on a broader scale. They help out with programs such as recycling, and work alongside other peers to keep our school green.
They chose to focus on waste minimization and energy conservation over the past few months in order to work for change. Erin and Rachel gave students at our school many opportunities to join in. Through messages on classroom boards, as well as over the announcements, they have encouraged our school community to use less technology and save energy by turning out the lights in classrooms. They also offered activities for others to involve themselves in such as a schoolyard cleanup. Erin and Rachel participated in a waste audit during school as well, and with Ecos they have encouraged recycling properly by posting information above bins around the school (see image below) They have also spent time encouraging students around the school to use reusable containers for their food, rewarding them with candy during a lunch hour. The girls understand the negative impact our cars have on the environment, too, so they announced a day as walk or carpool to school for students that do not take buses.
Be Inspired and be Involved
Erin and Rachel are a clear example that changing simple things in our day to day lives can actually make a difference. It is so important to remember that we have an impact on our planet, and that it can either be positive or negative.
If you attend Nantyr shores, be inspired to help the initiative. Be more Eco friendly by driving to school with your friends and walking when the weather is nice. Take recycling seriously and minimize your waste.
This is our community, and more importantly our earth.
